The storms and freezing temperatures of winter can be particularly harsh on your windows. And because windows are such an important feature in the home, you want to make sure window maintenance is at the top of your spring cleaning list. If you don’t take the time to routinely inspect and clean your windows you might have to get replacement windows much sooner than you anticipated. So here are some simple steps you can follow to keep your windows in good repair and get them ready for springtime.

Window Inspection

Issues with window panes can be fairly obvious. Things like warping, rot, chipped paint, and rust will be apparent. Also, broken glass or fogging between the panes are both clear signs it is time for replacement windows. But some problems are not as noticeable. This is why it is important to inspect and test every window in the home to make sure there are no leaks and windows operate smoothly.

Remove Screens

After you inspect the windows, remove the screens. Check for rips or sagging material. And if everything is in order, prop window screens up in the bathtub or lay them on a flat surface outside. Wash the screens with mild detergent and water. Scrub tough stains with a soft bristle brush. Rinse with clear water and then let screens dry while you finish your other maintenance tasks.

Wash the Window Frame

You should not use abrasives, harsh chemicals, or power washers on your window frames. Instead stick to a mild detergent, water, and a lint-free cloth. For tougher spots use a soft bristle brush and a higher concentration of the detergent. Wipe with clear water and then towel dry so water does not drip down into the frame.

Clean the Glass

Hopefully, cleaning the glass isn’t something new. Simply use a generic glass cleaner or a combination of vinegar and water. Use a lint-free cloth to dry and polish the glass to a streak-free shine.

Lubricate Track and Hardware

The window frame has all types of nooks and crannies where dirt and debris can build up. And debris contributes to window jams, which can cause more permanent damage. So first, remove loose dust and dirt with a vacuum and a soft bristle brush. And for debris wedged in place, try using a plastic putty knife to remove it. Once the track is clear you can spray a silicone lubricant into a rag and wipe things down. This will help protect the parts against friction and ensure a smooth and effortless operation.

Reseal the Edges

Once the window is clean, you can check the edges for gaps. If you notice cracking caulk or worn out weather stripping you can replace it with just a quick trip to the hardware store. Sealing up the windows in spring will prevent pests from getting inside and help improve energy efficiency.

After some spring maintenance, you might decide it is time for replacement aluminium windows or sliding doors. If so, contact the experts at Abbey Aluminium today! Phone (02) 9771 2800

Getting new windows is a big investment and turns a home upside down for a couple of days. The magnitude and inconvenience often put people off. So instead of getting replacement windows in the South of Sydney in the Sutherland Shire, when they should, they come up with a million excuses to put the project off. Unfortunately, the excuses and the delay end up costing them more in the long run. These are some of the worst excuses people use to avoid installing replacement windows:

Replacement Windows Don’t Make Much Difference

The windows in the home do so much. They provide natural light and ventilation. They help protect the home against heat gains, noise pollution, and harmful UV rays. They offer safety and security. They also contribute to the aesthetics of the home and are an important focal point both inside and out. Getting new windows will make a significant difference in a number of ways.

My Old Windows Can Last a Few More Years

People always assume their old windows simply aren’t that bad. They also decide that dealing with outdated windows is just a minor inconvenience instead of a home improvement emergency. After all, if the glass isn’t broken, why fix it? The truth of the matter is that smaller problems with windows can lead to larger damages to the substructure of your home and more expensive renovations in the future.

I Can Just Make Repairs

Some minor repairs, like replacing the caulk or weather stripping, are easy. But there are other things windows repairs simply cannot resolve. Warped frames, cracked glass, and fogging between the panes all require window replacement.

I Don’t Have Time for this Project

Yes, it takes time to sift through the various products and find the right window style, size, frame material, and glazing options. But once those decisions have been made homeowners can leave the installation to the professionals. It may turn life upside down for a couple of days, but professional installers can complete the entire project quickly and efficiently. That is not something that can be said of DIY window installation.

I Should Wait for the Weather to Improve

A lot of homeowners believe they have to wait for spring or summer before they get new windows. Sure, those are popular times to get replacement windows. But they are not the only times. Installers tackle projects year-round. And they have the proper skills and tools to help protect the home in any season and any kind of weather.

I am Moving Soon Anyway

Homeowners might put off replacement windows because they plan to sell the home. What they might not realize is replacement windows can get them a great return on their investment. Not only will they boost curb appeal and increase the value of the home, but also attract the attention of prospective buyers.

New Windows are Too Expensive

New windows are an investment, it is true. But so is every other home improvement project. But the good news is new windows can also save time and money. They increase energy savings. They require fewer repairs and less maintenance. And they increase the value of the home. And with so many options on the market, homeowners are sure to find products to suit their needs and budget.

Every bus ride across The Bridge – the tail-end of my journey from Sydney’s outer-west to its CBD – involves my eye being caught by one siriusly cool building. What is it about this concrete structure, that gets me every time? Maybe it’s the fact that this form is simply a series of stacked rectangular prisms… Or that its curated planter boxes give it life and human scale. Or perhaps it’s the simplicity with which it presents itself, and the way in which it seemingly defies the architectural language of everything else on the harbour – entirely honest; and categorically, ‘brutal’.

Surely there is something special about a building that, despite being amidst monuments like the Opera House, commands one’s attention.

Until the recent threat to this building’s existence, little did I know, that this was not just a Brutalist statement, but also a social one. Actually, I didn’t even know what ‘Brutalism’ was, when I first set my eyes on Sirius, having just embarked on my journey as a student of Architecture. But I didn’t need to know – Brutalism’s truthful expression of materials and structure speaks to one and all.

And three years later, as I sit in a room full of architects and heritage enthusiasts, being addressed by Glenn Harper of PTW, on the features of Brutalism, I learn that as one of the few remaining Australian structures of its kind, Sirius needs to be kept – not only as a testament to the country’s mid-century modernist boom and thriving concrete craftsmanship of the time, but also as a testament to the country’s belief that social housing does, in fact, have a place on Sydney’s sought-after harbour-front.

The protagonist of my story, whose name you are now familiar with – Sirius – was designed in the late 1970s for the Housing Commission, by architect, Tao Gofers. Now, three decades on, the housing estate is under threat by the government, who has rejected the NSW Heritage Council’s plea to list Sirius on the state’s heritage register. Without a heritage listing, and with the building left purposely unmaintained, it awaits an almost-inevitable fate of destruction in favour of new private-housing development.

Already seeing Sydney’s suburbs being populated with apartment blocks at an incredible rate, I wonder whether we really need a few more on the harbour, at the cost of a cultural icon that speaks of the response of an architectural movement to a social cause: housing working-class residents who would otherwise not have been able to remain in the area at the time.

Perhaps, if it weren’t for Sirius’ noble function – if Sirius was nothing but a showpiece – I wouldn’t be sympathising with its supporters. But because it stands tall for the rights of those who aren’t as privileged as others – and gives them a prime spot on Sydney’s landscape – I am compelled to admit that I am one of its supporters.

If this piece of heritage and history defies today’s money-driven development of the city I call home – if it rejects the agenda of the ridiculously rapid erection of luxury apartments that lack architectural integrity and sustainability – and if it prioritises people over revenue, then how can I not hope for its continued existence?

And as I sit here, pen in hand, in a room full of architects and heritage enthusiasts, being addressed by Glenn Harper of PTW, on the features of Brutalism, I can’t help but question how and why the architectural brilliance of the Brutalist movement – its sensitivity to scale; its simple, modular approach to form; its bold brickwork and characteristic concrete; its unapologetic expression of mechanical services; it’s strong structure and modest fenestration – has been lost to an era of tall glass boxes that have questionable narrative or connection to place, in an economic race to be the tallest, fastest and fanciest. For in a bid to be iconic, are we forsaking the icons we already hold – and frankly – cannot compete with?

I believe a city’s character lives in its history and public buildings. If we are destroying these treasures, then perhaps it is time to revaluate our priorities as a nation. Siriusly.

Australia’s largest range of BAL-40 bushfire rated windows and doors just got bigger with the addition of newly tested and certified products to the collection.

Architectural Window Systems (AWS) began a massive exercise last year to get their products to undergo BAL-40 bushfire testing work in order to significantly increase their BAL-40 bushfire tested and certified aluminium windows and doors offering.

Following the successful testing and certifications, AWS announces that they have increased their BAL-40 bushfire rated window and door offering by 33 per cent. The newly expanded collection, which includes new double-hung windows as well as a broader sliding and bi-fold door range, will allow more flexibility and choice when specifying AWS products for bushfire zones.

Living in bushfire prone areas shouldn’t mean losing out on the view. AWS’ window and door products can withstand the harsh requirements of a BAL-40 bushfire zone without compromising on size. The recent testing allows AWS to offer larger glass panel sizes as part of their offering.

The AWS range

For single glazed window and door products, the maximum allowable glass area has increased from 2.90m² to 4.50m²;

When using single glazing above 2.90m² through to 4.50m², a minimum 8mm toughened glass is required for compliance;

For double glazed window and door products, the maximum allowable glass area has increased from 2.94m² to 4.50m²;

When using double glazing above 2.94m² through to 4.50m², a minimum 6mm tough/ 8mm air/ 6mm tough combination must be used for compliance.

Following up on customer requests to include laminated glass in their double glazed panel testing for achieving acoustic performance in applications requiring BAL-40 certification, AWS has successfully tested a 20.38mm IGU (6mm toughened, 8mm air, 6.38mm laminated glass).

The following products have been added to the AWS BAL-40 bushfire rated windows and doors product list:

Series 514 Residential Double-hung Window

Series 613 Designer Double-hung Window

Series 453 Commercial Double-hung Window

Series 463 Architectural Double-hung Window

Hinged Doors or Sliding Doors? Which Is Better for Your Patio?

Your patio is your outdoor oasis. It’s where you go when you want to relax or entertain guests. If you’ve decided to make some improvements to your patio, your patio doors might be one area to work on. But with so many patio door styles to choose from, you’re probably wondering what will work best for you and your home.

The two most common types of patio door are hinged doors and sliding doors. Both door styles possess unique attributes that can benefit your space. But which style of door is right for you, hinged or sliding?

Before you choose, consider the advantages of each door style. Then, ask yourself if those advantages meet your particular needs.

Sliding glass doors

A sliding glass patio door slides from side to side, with one glass panel stationary and one able to move. As far as benefits go, you’ll gain:

Space: Space is a good attribute to have when you regularly entertain guests. If your furniture is near your doors, French doors that open inwards will limit your space. Because sliding doors move to the side, they give you more space to work with.

Light: Sliding doors come in two glass panels. This allows natural light to stream into your home during the day. If, like 78 per cent of Aussies, you feel uplifted in a bright and light environment, then this benefit might appeal to you.

Safety: Is wind a factor in your yard? Then a sliding door will provide safety in that it won’t swing shut in strong winds. Nor will a young child or dog inadvertently slam it shut.

Views: Even when you aren’t outside, you can enjoy the beauty of your patio and garden with sliding doors. Their large glass panes give you a seamless view that is slightly better than that of a pair of French doors.

Screening: You can add screens to sliding doors. This will help keep the bugs out in summer. Screens also allow you to keep pets in while you are entertaining guests outside.

Sliding glass doors offer an elegant and versatile touch to your patio design in addition to the previously mentioned benefits and should be worth considering if you’re improving your patio.

Hinged doors and French doors

French doors also work great with patios because they come with one or more glass panels. This is an important feature for a patio door, as a solid door would block your view. A hinged or French door will give you the following beneficial features:

Handles: Hinged or French doors give you more freedom when it comes to selecting door handles. If you like to match the handles throughout your home then, hinged doors would be a better fit.

Hooks: With a hinged door, you can add hooks to hang coats and other clothing items. This is useful if you have a backyard swimming pool as you can hang towels on those hooks.

Access: French doors open up fully on both sides to give you a large amount of access space. Sliding doors only open on one side. This advantage is ideal if someone in your family is wheelchair-bound. It’s also a great advantage for moving furniture to and from your patio during parties.

Ventilation: The ability to open both doors means that French doors are great if you need—or want—more ventilation in your home.

Design: French doors are more classical in appearance than sliding doors are. If your home is colonial in style, French doors will be a great addition to your patio.

Are you ready to choose a set of patio doors for your outdoor space? Call Abbey Aluminium today and we’ll help you to choose between sliding doors and hinged doors.

A Hamptons-inspired home is becoming increasingly popular in Australia. It’s defined by casual, relaxed beach-style living but done in a contemporary way. Picture this: Plenty of natural daylight, a neutral colour palette with textures and hints of navy and creams. No longer do you only get to enjoy this style when you holiday in an Airbnb, now you can achieve this look too! Now, we are no interior stylists or architects but we do know windows and doors. Let us take you through some options because, in our opinion, windows and doors are the key features to ‘get right’ when creating a Hamptons-inspired home.

Pearl White French doors on an upstairs balcony paired with a soft sheer curtain is a trademark of true Hamptons style living. Waking up and opening the French doors to let a breeze through will be your favorite task of the morning.

Bi-fold doors are popular to connect the indoor living and outdoor living areas. Our bi-fold door panels glide effortlessly on bottom rollers and are compatible with industry-leading Centor retractable flyscreens for a beautiful, integrated look.

Double-hung windows with colonial bars are a big feature of Hamptons-inspired homes. Often the tops of the windows have the colonial bars and the bottoms are left untouched, which is great for ventilation.

A trend we are starting to see more of is the servery window. Often in the form of a bi-fold window, it is placed in the kitchen where the kitchen bench extends into the outdoor entertaining area. Perfect for marrying the indoor and outdoor areas and creating a fantastic feature.

So there we have it. Some options to get you thinking about your Hamptons-inspired home. Just remember how important the windows and doors are!

Double-hung windows are suitable for modern homes. Look at some of the unique advantages that aluminium double-hung windows offer.

5 Unique Advantages of Aluminium Double-Hung Windows

When it comes to windows, few designs are more elegant and classical than double-hung windows. And although double-hung windows are one of the oldest window designs around, they are suitable for modern homes. In fact, aluminium double-hung windows offer some unique and valuable advantages.

1. Natural cross convection

To see clearly how this benefit works, you’ll need to first understand what convection is. Hot air is lighter than cold air. This is why hot air rises and why the upper rooms of your home are hotter on a hot summer’s day. At the same time, cold air sinks. Scientists call this natural phenomenon convection. And a convection current is when hot air rises and cold air sinks to create a cycle.

Double-hung windows can allow you to take advantage of this natural process to cool your home. On a hot day, when a breeze is blowing outside, you can allow cool air to enter your home if you open the bottom of a double-hung window on the windward side.

Then, on the opposite side of your home, you can release hot air if you open the top half of a double-hung window. This will create a convection current that brings in cold air in one side and pushes out hot air on the other side. This can help you cut down on air conditioner use and fill your home with fresh, cool air.

2. Open during rainfall

A little-known benefit of double-hung windows is the ability to have the upper portion of your windows open slightly during rainfall. This is particularly useful on days when a storm rolls in after hot weather. You’ll be able to cool your house without damaging your windowsill or floors.

And, if you’d like to air out your house while you pop out for a moment, you can leave the top window open just a crack so that if it does rain, you won’t need to worry about rain getting into your home.

3. Safe for children

If you have young and curious children, double-hung windows can keep them cool and safe. Casement windows leave space for a child to squeeze into or reach through. But with a double-hung window, you only need open up the top window a little to let in fresh air.

4. Convenient in tight spaces

Double-hung windows are also a convenient option for small rooms and narrow spaces and walkways. Unlike casement windows, which project outwards, double-hung windows open upwards or downwards, and this means they will not take up space in a confined area.

And double-hung windows are convenient in rooms that look out onto outdoor recreation areas, such as a deck or patio. For instance, you can open them without worrying that they might obstruct someone in your yard.

5. Impervious to rot and warp damage

Aluminium double-hung windows have one clear advantage over windows built with timber or vinyl. Unlike those materials, aluminium doesn’t warp in severe weather such as heavy rainfall or harsh, prolonged sunlight. And you won’t have to apply coats of protective paint to keep your aluminium from suffering water or UV damage.

And while aluminium doesn’t rust as steel or iron does, it might experience some corrosion. But aluminium corrosion creates a grey, silvery-coloured coating that isn’t as easy to notice as the orange-coloured rust of iron and steel.

Where to Place Sliding Windows to Best Complement Your Home

Choosing the right window type for your home can be a difficult task. There are so many types from which to choose. But not every room and every corner of your home needs to employ the same window type. For instance, sliding windows come with unique benefits that might only be useful in certain rooms.

But where should you place sliding windows to get the best out of them? Keep reading to learn about where a sliding window would best complement your home.

In places that are hard to reach

Because sliding windows are relatively simple to open, they work well in places where you need to reach over furniture or appliances to get to them. For instance, a sliding glass window would work well above a kitchen sink or above a bathtub. Likewise, sliding glass windows also work well in small laundry rooms, where space might be limited and easy access to fresh air is a must!

In areas where you like to entertain outdoors

In Australia, one in two homeowners entertains their guests in their outdoor space. If you also enjoy entertaining guests out on your patio or deck, you will benefit if the windows in those areas don’t take up valuable space. For instance, awning windows that open outward into those areas would obstruct your guests. This window type would also block outdoor paths.

Sliding windows work great in these areas because they don’t take up valuable deck or patio space. Moreover, you can also communicate easily with guests using stacking sliding windows if you are inside.

In locations between the kitchen and dining area

Do you have an alfresco dining area in your yard? Then a sliding stacking window would be an ideal addition to your home in that area. A sliding window would allow you to transfer items from your indoor kitchen to your alfresco dining area. You’ll also be able to transfer dirty dishes to your kitchen sink more easily with a sliding stacking window connecting the two areas. A bonus here, is that these can have a sliding fly screen!

In spaces that need good ventilation

A double sliding window can open from both sides. That means you get double the ventilation options that you would with just one sliding window or an awning window. In stuffy areas of your home that tend to heat up quickly during the summer, ventilation is important. And if you want to give your air conditioning a rest on hot days, you can open up both sliding windows.

In walls where there is more width than height

Sliding windows are wider than they are taller, so not only will they fit in a wider space better but they’ll also give you a more panoramic view than traditionally taller narrower windows will. That makes them perfect for homes that look out onto naturally beautiful settings. A window can frame the view!

Sliding windows offer many unique benefits. Do you want to add them to your home in your upcoming renovations? Then get in touch with Abbey Aluminium today.

Add a Servery Window to Your Kitchen & Enjoy Alfresco Living!

Australian’s love the outdoors and take every opportunity to incorporate our beautiful climate into our daily life. Bi-fold and sliding servery windows are the ideal product and a home-entertainer’s dream!

Connecting the kitchen to the outside living space is highly desirable with our modern day living. Add a servery window to your kitchen and enjoy alfresco living. Whilst we are inside cooking up a storm or preparing the cheese platter, we want to still be connected to our guests through conversation, uninterrupted views and ease of access to pass food and drink through the window.

Servery windows can bring in sought after natural light and ventilation into the kitchen. You can keep an eye on your children or grandchildren much easier with a clear view of the outdoor area. Not to mention a nicer view when doing the dishes!

With the benefit of a running track that can be recessed into servery benches to create a stylish, up-market finish, a flush frame creates bench space when opened. Another benefit is the creation of a functioning space that would have been an impractical brick wall. With functionality and aesthetic appeal like this, it’ll be the talk of the street.

There are plenty of considerations to make when choosing the right set of windows for your home, from their purpose to their aesthetic appeal, it is never an easy choice. To help make the decision easier for you we have outlined the three most important factors to take into account when choosing your ideal windows; style, performance and material.

The different styles of window to choose from:

The purpose of your windows will be central to the shape and style that you choose.

Allowing light into the home. If you are looking to allow the maximum amount of light into your house then floor to ceiling windows and glass sliding doors are the ideal choice.

Looking for privacy. Bathrooms and bedrooms might want a little more privacy than the more common areas of the house, so elements like tinting, frosted glass or shutters are a great way to earn a little more alone time.

Street appeal. If you are looking to increase the appeal of your home then square windows or elegant grill designs can add a touch of personality.

Having the proper ventilation means that your windows need to be able to open. Wind-out or awning windows are designed to be opened to allow air into the house while still keeping the rain and worst of the wind outside.

Considering energy efficiency and performance:

There are several practical considerations that you should take into account when choosing windows for your home that are not just about style. Some important points to think about include:

Your home’s acoustic performance. If you live in the city or near a noisy centre then the acoustic insulation of your windows will become a vital consideration for a good night’s sleep. Make sure that the windows you choose will keep out the noise if you live in a busy area.

Your home’s security needs. While most Australian homes will not need anything more than basic security precautions, if you do live in a higher risk area then you should take into account the strength of your glass, the quality of the framing, sophistication of the locks and the affect of window size on the safety performance of your windows.

Your home’s energy efficiency. Choosing double or triple paned glass will drastically improve the energy efficiency of your home, saving you money on heating and cooling.

What material is right for you?

Common window framing materials include wood, uPVC and aluminium. While each has its own strengths, such as the aesthetic appeal of wooden frames or the thermal performance of uPVC, aluminium is probably the material with the greatest flexibility and benefit in the long run. Aluminium is:

Extremely tough. Aluminium is remarkably strong, making it the ideal material for large fixtures. It is also corrosion and rust resistant and will not warp or crack over time like wood.

Affordable. Aluminium is a very accessible material making it more affordable than other common options. It also has a long life expectancy and will save you money over the years in low maintenance costs.

Energy efficient. When properly designed aluminium windows can be very energy efficient and heat resistant, making them an ideal choice for the Australian climate.

Flexible in design. Due to its strength and malleability aluminium can be used to create almost any shape, making it ideal for custom window designs. It also comes in the full spectrum of colours, which are powder coated onto the aluminium, meaning that the paint will never peal or flake.
