ABBEY ALUMINIUM ADJUSTABLE LOUVRE

The storms and freezing temperatures of winter can be particularly harsh on your windows. And because windows are such an important feature in the home, you want to make sure window maintenance is at the top of your spring cleaning list. If you don’t take the time to routinely inspect and clean your windows you might have to get replacement windows much sooner than you anticipated. So here are some simple steps you can follow to keep your windows in good repair and get them ready for springtime.

  1. Window Inspection

Issues with window panes can be fairly obvious. Things like warping, rot, chipped paint, and rust will be apparent. Also, broken glass or fogging between the panes are both clear signs it is time for replacement windows. But some problems are not as noticeable. This is why it is important to inspect and test every window in the home to make sure there are no leaks and windows operate smoothly.

  1. Remove Screens

After you inspect the windows, remove the screens. Check for rips or sagging material. And if everything is in order, prop window screens up in the bathtub or lay them on a flat surface outside. Wash the screens with mild detergent and water. Scrub tough stains with a soft bristle brush. Rinse with clear water and then let screens dry while you finish your other maintenance tasks.

  1. Wash the Window Frame

You should not use abrasives, harsh chemicals, or power washers on your window frames. Instead stick to a mild detergent, water, and a lint-free cloth. For tougher spots use a soft bristle brush and a higher concentration of the detergent. Wipe with clear water and then towel dry so water does not drip down into the frame.

  1. Clean the Glass

Hopefully, cleaning the glass isn’t something new. Simply use a generic glass cleaner or a combination of vinegar and water. Use a lint-free cloth to dry and polish the glass to a streak-free shine.

  1. Lubricate Track and Hardware

The window frame has all types of nooks and crannies where dirt and debris can build up. And debris contributes to window jams, which can cause more permanent damage. So first, remove loose dust and dirt with a vacuum and a soft bristle brush. And for debris wedged in place, try using a plastic putty knife to remove it. Once the track is clear you can spray a silicone lubricant into a rag and wipe things down. This will help protect the parts against friction and ensure a smooth and effortless operation.

  1. Reseal the Edges

Once the window is clean, you can check the edges for gaps. If you notice cracking caulk or worn out weather stripping you can replace it with just a quick trip to the hardware store. Sealing up the windows in spring will prevent pests from getting inside and help improve energy efficiency.
